Helena Township, The Heart of Torch Lake

Since the late 1800s

Nestled in the heart of Antrim County, Helena Township has a rich history shaped by land, water, and the people who chose to call Northern Michigan home. The township was officially organized in the late 1800s, during a time when settlers were drawn to the area’s vast forests, fertile soil, and access to nearby lakes and rivers.

Early residents made their living through logging, farming, and small local trades, helping establish the rural character that still defines Helena Township today. As the logging era faded, agriculture and recreation took on a larger role, with families passing land and traditions from one generation to the next.

Over time, Helena Township evolved while maintaining its close-knit, small-town feel. Seasonal visitors discovered the area’s natural beauty, while year-round residents continued to build a community rooted in stewardship, independence, and respect for the land.

Today, Helena Township honors its past while looking toward the future — balancing growth, preservation, and community values. From its quiet back roads to its scenic landscapes, the township remains a place where history isn’t just remembered — it’s lived every day.
